Saint Gertrud Church

The church was built in the 16th century by the German congregation, which was founded in the 14th century. It was the center of Stockholm's German-speaking bourgeoisie. The church is built in the brick Gothic style, which was common in northern Germany during the Middle Ages. The current spire was added in 1885 after a fire. It is designed by the German architect Julius Carl Raschdorff from Berlin. At 96 meters high, it is the highest point in the Old Town.

Albertus Pictor

Albertus Pictor (c. 1440–1507) was a prominent German medieval church painter, whose work mainly consists of frescoes in vaults and on walls in a large number of churches in the Mälardalen region. He is known for his unique style that combines medieval traditions with new elements and a sense of detail and humor.

Saint George and the Dragon by Bernt Notke

Bernt Notke born before 1450 and died. 1509, was a North German painter and sculptor. He was one of the most significant Northern European artists of the late Middle Ages. In 1484 he was called to Sweden to execute the large sculpture group Saint George and the Dragon in the Great Church in Stockholm on behalf of Sten Sture the Elder. The work was completed in 1489.

Tyrolean Landscape with Naudersberg Castle

The Nationalmuseum has a collection of works that represent German Romanticism. One example is the painting Tyrolean Landscape with Naudersberg Castle from 1847 by Ernst Ferdinand Oehm.

The German language

The German language have had a great influence on Swedish – especially on trade terminology, city administration and crafts. Many words in law, economics and architecture are of German origin (e.g. mayor, window, handcraft).

Merchant houses in Old Town

Many merchant houses in the Old Town were built by German merchants, often in brick and in the style that dominated in Hanseatic cities such as Lübeck, and several streets still bear German-sounding names.
